Break-Even Calculator for Solopreneurs

Calculate contribution margin, break-even sales, break-even revenue, and capacity use from price, variable costs, fees, and monthly fixed needs.

By Solopreneurship WikiReviewed September 2026
Wiki note: Break-even is reached only when sales cover variable costs, fixed business costs, and the owner compensation included in the model.

This calculator shows how much each sale contributes after variable costs and payment fees, then determines how many sales are needed to cover monthly fixed requirements.

Formula and assumptions

Contribution per sale = sale price − variable cost − payment fees. Break-even units = (fixed costs + owner compensation) ÷ contribution per sale.

Use source data where possible, record the date of your assumptions, and keep all monetary inputs in the selected currency. A precise-looking answer is only as reliable as the inputs behind it.

How to interpret the result

Compare break-even units with realistic capacity. If the result requires nearly all available slots, there is little room for cancellations, rework, or profit. Improve price, contribution margin, or fixed cost structure before scaling volume.

Stress-test the decision

Run a conservative case, an expected case, and an optimistic case. Change one important assumption at a time so you can see what actually drives the answer. Define the action you will take if the conservative case occurs.

Worked example

A productized service sells for 1,500, has 300 in variable delivery cost and a 3% payment fee. Monthly fixed costs are 2,200 and required owner compensation is 4,000. Capacity is six deliveries per month.

Replace every example value with evidence from your own accounts, time records, quotes, contracts, or customer data. Save the result alongside those sources so it can be reviewed later.

Limitations

The model assumes one average offer and stable costs. A mixed product portfolio, stepped costs, tax, discounts, refunds, and payment timing require a fuller contribution-margin model.

Calculator outputs are educational planning estimates. They are not financial, tax, legal, employment, investment, or medical advice and they do not guarantee a business outcome.

Continue with break-even point, gross margin, profitability.
