Calculate business and personal financial runway from usable cash, obligations, recurring inflows, essential costs, and owner withdrawals.
By Solopreneurship WikiReviewed September 2026
Wiki note: Runway should be calculated from cash you can actually use and a conservative net burn rate, not the headline bank balance.
This calculator combines business and owner cash needs because a one-person business can fail when either side runs out of money. It subtracts committed obligations and compares usable cash with monthly net burn.

Formula and assumptions
Adjusted cash = unrestricted cash − near-term obligations. Monthly net burn = business outflows + owner outflows − confirmed inflows − conservative other inflows. Runway = adjusted cash ÷ net burn.
Use source data where possible, record the date of your assumptions, and keep all monetary inputs in the selected currency. A precise-looking answer is only as reliable as the inputs behind it.
How to interpret the result
Run several cases and use the shortest credible result for decisions. When net burn is zero or negative, cash is not currently declining; still monitor concentration, renewal risk, and delayed payments.
Stress-test the decision
Run a conservative case, an expected case, and an optimistic case. Change one important assumption at a time so you can see what actually drives the answer. Define the action you will take if the conservative case occurs.
Worked example
A solopreneur has 32,000 in usable cash, 2,000 in upcoming obligations, 900 of confirmed monthly inflows, 200 of other conservative inflows, 1,400 in essential business costs, and 2,600 in owner needs.
Replace every example value with evidence from your own accounts, time records, quotes, contracts, or customer data. Save the result alongside those sources so it can be reviewed later.
Limitations
The estimate assumes cash moves evenly each month. It does not model invoice dates, tax deadlines, seasonality, exchange rates, restricted funds, or sudden emergencies.
Calculator outputs are educational planning estimates. They are not financial, tax, legal, employment, investment, or medical advice and they do not guarantee a business outcome.
